Back to School Resources from NAMI

August is a time of change as students, families, and teachers get ready for the new school year. It’s normal for everyone—students, parents, caregivers, and teachers—to feel excited and a little nervous, often called the “back-to-school jitters.”

To help with this, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has shared new resources for 2024. These are meant to help students, parents, and teachers build healthy habits and handle tough situations. While they are made for school, anyone who works with or cares about kids can use them.

The resources have strategies, advice, and quick tips:

  • For Educators: Teachers often notice when a student’s behavior changes. These tools can help teachers talk about mental health and offer support.

  • For Parents and Caregivers: Learn how to create a safe space to talk about mental health and encourage good habits in your children.

  • For Students: Find out how to ask for help early, plan for tough times, avoid burnout, and more.

These resources can help everyone have a successful and mentally healthy school year.

International Overdose Awareness Day is observed globally as a day to recognize the deep impact of overdose on individuals, families, and communities. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of overdose prevention efforts and the need for continued advocacy.

We are honored to dedicate this year’s event to Dr. Robert A. Wheeler, MD, who pioneered addiction treatment at St. Rita’s Internal Medicine and Medication Management in Mercy Health. Dr. Wheeler’s philosophy of "treatment over punishment, compassion over condemnation, and empathy over placing blame" continues to inspire our community.
